After obtaining three environmental degrees and spending 15 years working for state and federal governments, I left my career as an ecologist in 2018.
It happened shortly after I had become a mother when I quickly realized how miserable I was in my current career path. I wanted to make sure that my son knew me as someone who enjoyed, and was even proud of, their work. So I set out to make that happen.
At first, I simply spent time with my son to enjoy the transition into motherhood. But then I got to work. I had always enjoyed writing in my job responsibilities and knew I was good at it. I took a freelance pitching course from a fellow outdoor freelance writer and author and the rest was history.
I now work as a full-time freelance writer focusing on slow and sustainable travel. I also dabble in the topics of parenting, maternal mental health and wellness, and environmental advocacy. I have bylines in The Denver Post, Matador Network, REI Co-op Journal, and can be heard on NPR's The Takeaway.
